Hi
I'm new in this community and also to this style building topic. So please bear with me and my lack of knowledge  Embarrassed

Due to the fact I don't like the new aero design of windows 8.1 I was searching for alternatives. I downloaded this theme here -> http://neiio.deviantart.com/art/Steam-VS-for-Windows-8-1-449893925

So far all seems to be ok for me. The only thing -> I want to get back the windows caption text. This theme uses a "blank"-font to disable all windows captions. Explorer windows are looking ok, but 3rd-Party apps not really. So I'm trying to get them back.

I set back:

CAPTIONFONT and SMALLCAPTIONFONT in Sysmetrics to Segoe UI, 11, Quality, ClearType and adjust them to a brighter color (nearly white). But nothing happens. I only get a gray bar where a Text should be. The longer the text is the longer also is this gray bar.

I also checked this Regkey: CaptionFont and SmCaptionFont in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics
It also shows me Segoe UI...

What could be the reason??  Shocked

1) You reversed the Blank.reg by applying the Default.reg right?

2) You changed caption fonts and colors in fonts & system metrics right?

3) You also have to change the textcolors to something lighter here:

Windows & Caption Buttons > Aero > DWM Window > Frames > Window > Top > Active
Windows & Caption Buttons > Aero > DWM Window > Frames > Window > Top > Inactive
Windows & Caption Buttons > Aero > DWM Window > Frames > Window > Top > MaxActive
Windows & Caption Buttons > Aero > DWM Window > Frames > Window > Top > MaxInactive

4) You are still going to have a background color behind the text. Because the frame uses a gradient the only way to deal with that is by using this: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/170850-aero-glass-for-win81-125/

Hi 3am,

many thanks for your reply. And also many thanks for your really detailed HowTos and maps. I really know how many time it could take to find out which setting changes what if you don't have any documentations from the developer  Wink

Well...

During doing some screenshots for this reply i figured out some mistakes.

1st
I really don't know why (because I checked it at least twice) the registry values where set to blank font again Shocked -> fixed

2nd
Yeah, this section is clean end should work as I want it to. Maybe I need some fine tuning
https://www.dropbox.com/s/vkinkiwrhzjs66u/Image%20001.png?dl=0

3rd
I was playing around with these parameters. Now it was possible to bring back the caption text for some window kinds. But not for all. e.g. the explorer is still without caption. Regedit or Taskmanager as example work fine.
-> https://www.dropbox.com/s/vlffmvq117tyo9x/Image%20002.png?dl=0

Other windows like PicPick or WSB are doing what they want. It seems to me that they are not affected to my set values

4th
On my former Windows 8.1 Installation I used AeroGlassfor8. But I encountered some troubles and instabilities due to Windows-Updates. So I decided against it this time ... for the moment Wink

BTW:

I have some applications which are using this ... I don't know am I right ... this ribbon framework. They are looking like Office Apps with there light blue color design. Unfortunately they not really harmonize with my text colors. And I absolutely hate these "blue" texts. Blue text on gray background is definitely unreadable  Angry

as you can see here -> https://www.dropbox.com/s/sowhpdpkibqrg9c/Image%20004.png?dl=0

Are there any known possibilities how to deal with this?

Thanks in advance

Also change textcolor at Windows & Caption Buttons > Basic > Frames > Window > Top

I don't know about the colors the app you have in your picture. But you could change the textcolors you have for rgb 160, 160, 160 to see which changes.

just add to
Windows & Caption Buttons > Basic > Frames > Window > Top > Active
and also to
Windows & Caption Buttons > Basic > Frames > Window > Top > Inactive
a text color property .

some windows  like even the windows style builder taken its property Text color from the basic theme.

also if you want to those specific windows a glow around text , go to
Fonts, Colors, & System Metrics > Colors (Globals)

and change the value of glowintencity> for example to 250, glowcolor with your favour, and also you can experiment with textglowsize values, if needed.
