You seem to be confused right at the start. Try this:

1) Make a copy of Aero
2) Rename it something like Test, and everything else in it that says Aero (rightclick, choose rename)
3) Store it anywhere
4) Start WSB. Click "Open an existing visual style". Open your Test.msstyles
5) Do your change at Explorer&Shell > Explorer> ItemsView > ItemsView: Fillcolor
6) Save your change to Test.msstyles
7) Choose to use your new visual style
8) You should now see default Aero with your new Explorer background
9) That's it. You don't have to do anything else. NEVER try to modify default Aero.msstyles.

Thanks for the tips.

Using the new msstyles did not change the background colour and I got a classic start button instead of the orb.

Hmmm .. Embarrassed

Thanks for your patience.

I installed the following -
Microsoft.Visual.C++.2008.Redistributable.Package.x64
UxStyle_Core_jul13_x64

First attempt - makes me want to be more adventurous
